Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces. They are stainless steel and sometimes used in combination with titanium. These braces have a metal bracket that is glued to the front of each tooth, with elastic rubber bands or ties holding the wire onto the metal brackets.
Another type of braces is made of ceramic. These braces are a cosmetic alternative to traditional metal braces by blending in more with the natural colour of the teeth, hence being less conspicuous or hidden. But ceramic brackets may stain and discolor by the end of treatment. Bands made of plastic or ceramic also have more friction between the wire and brackets. This can increase treatment time. Dr. Anita Kouba will discuss the available options with you.
