Dental Crowns and Bridges

More than a cosmetic solution

Often marketed as a cosmetic solution, dental crowns and bridges do so much more than just revolutionise the look of your smile: they can also repair and protect damaged teeth, are used in root canals to maintain tooth function, and can even be attached to dental implants to serve as a total tooth replacement.

Ashfield Dental Centre pride ourselves on our high-quality dental crowns and bridgework. We work alongside Sydney’s finest technicians to fabricate bespoke restorations which are nothing short of perfection. We make all our restorations using the highest quality materials, and our dentists will fully educate you on the best way to look after your new restoration.

What are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are caps made of porcelain, composite resin, or ceramic which cover the entire outer surface of your tooth. They’re often used to protect and restore damaged, root- filled, or decayed teeth to their former glory. They’re often called ‘caps’ or ‘dental caps’ and are usually used to restore single teeth.

What are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges are a false tooth held in place by crowns on either side. The crowns are attached to the healthy teeth on either side of the gap and cemented in place to create a permanent solution to your missing tooth. Bridges are a great way to replace missing teeth: they restore your natural smile, maintain the shape of your face, help you to speak and chew properly by distributing the force of your bite, and help to prevent alignment concerns caused by your teeth drifting out of place to fill the gap.

How are bridges and crowns attached?

Before your crown or bridge can be attached, it needs to be produced. To do this, your dentist will numb your mouth and drill away the outer parts of the teeth which are being replaced. They will then take a mould of your teeth to ensure a perfect fit, and send it to a lab where specialised technicians will create your new crown or bridge, which will get back to your dentist in 2-3 weeks. During this time, you’ll have temporary crowns affixed to protect your teeth.

Once the new crown or bridge is ready, you’ll come back to the clinic to have it attached. Your dentist will remove any temporary caps, adjust your crown or bridge as needed to suit your bite and smile, and affix it with dental cement. Once the cement is dry, your teeth will be fully restored!

Bridge and crown care

Once your new crown or bridge is in place, dental hygiene becomes especially important. This is because the nature of crowns and bridges (especially bridges) allows bacteria to quickly build up and cause decay if not removed. If you weren’t already doing so before, you’ll need to brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss at least daily, and take care to watch what you eat (eating hard candies or chewing ice can cause damage). Failure to do so could cause your dental work’s lifetime to decrease and cause further oral issues.

How do I know if crowns or bridges are right for me?

Crowns and bridges are a great solution to a wide variety of dental concerns, but they may not be the best solution for yours. If you have a lot of missing teeth, pre-existing health conditions, or severely damaged teeth, solutions such as dental implants or dentures may be better for you.
